The DVD was developed in 1995 by a consortium of manufacturers that included Sony, Panasonic and Toshiba. While physically similar, the laser that reads a CD cannot read a DVD, although the reverse is not the case. Copying DVD music files to a CD so they can be read by both players requires copying the files to a computer’s hard drive first and then burning them to a blank CD. The process can be quickly accomplished because most computer operating systems have built-in software for burning files to CDs.
